Can Instagram's Mobile-Only Strategy Work for Other Apps?

I do love instagram, I lived without it for a few months (while I tried to convert to windows phone- fail) before returning to the iPhone. I think though, that although yes the app is for mobile only, users find out about it through facebook, twitter, tumblr, flickr etc because that’s where you see the content instagram generates. Strictly mobile-only would presumably have a much bigger challenge to gain visibility. People use social networking in different ways, and I’d say they use instagram in different ways to - I use it to publish photos to my other networks, and only look at the instagram feed when I’m on the train or waiting for the kettle to boil.

Nokia reading app - interesting feature “news feed” pulls content from websites, presents in readable format, if synced it is available offline (cached)… some similarities with the flipboard app for iOs which is a good thing, and the increasingly personalised view of the web and the content that you are interested in is clearly a popular trend. Books can also be purchased inside the application, and you can even pin the book you are currently reading to your home screen (so you can start reading from where you left off). Should I continue the long suffer without Instagram and keep my Nokia Lumia?!
