Final ever ‘prototype video’. I have it working, and although the microphone is a bit of a compromise, it is a fair compromise to make considering the results. Re-considering having it work live while I film the final film. Would be gratifying!

Plan
This week I’m leaving the new microphone and software with Mum, to see if, with a longer time to play, we can get this microphone working at least as well as the previous headset version. I am spending today and tomorrow storyboarding the film, and preparing a narrative monologue for the introduction. I am playing with the idea of the dysarthric speaker partially narrating the film, with the...

Although this is the experience prototype pretty much complete, it is so painfully close to working ‘for real’ (as in, consistently, unlike the examples in this video) that I feel a little depressed about it all now! This works a lot more than I ever dreamed it would in the beginning, and I know that things would only improve if it was made commercial: if I had more control over the...

My project still excites me. There are a few ‘backwards steps’ in terms of speed and font size and word removal… but that’s from playing around with it, and I’ll sort it oot!!

Filming technique
I did temporarily have a small video clip uploaded. But… I deleted it as I have worked out how to film things a bit better with my camera, woohoo! There is a slight issue with flickering / scrolling horizontal lines - the solution is to adjust the exposure compensation, and lock the auto exposure. So every day really is a school day. Going to keep playing until I have this down to a tea, and...

Hurrumph.
After having a slightly productive streak, I feel like I’m basically fannying around at the moment with no real direction. Flat is going on the market which was the uber stress of the start of the week, but now, I don’t know. I feel stuck in a rut. I need inspired.
I need a new sound… reminds me of the Mighty Boosh episode where they are searching for the new sound - and they...

Ataxia UK group meeting update...
We had a meeting of the East of Scotland Branch of Ataxia UK this afternoon (I am the secretary). It was a really good turnout -our best for a long time, with 20 people, 8 of whom have ataxia and 9 are relatives / carers. One member even travelled by train from Glasgow to attend, in her powered wheelchair. This is Calum Pringle, whose Mum has late onset cerebellar ataxia. He is currently finishing...

SO. This marks the end of my second make phase of Subtle Subtitles. Apart from tweaking code and such as I test with my user(s) this IS my honors project. Oh and of course, that small matter of sewing in a sexy new microphone (which was ordered 2.5 weeks ago, and due to absolutely no fault of my own, isn’t here yet!)
Since the first make phase I have branded and ironed out the ipod...

I'm back...
Had an awesome weekend, escaped uni work and other stresses, but I have a presentation tomorrow so I’ve been spending that last hours sewing. It’s coming together, with a VERY nice pocket now…
I'm taking a small break...
… I’m in Manchester for gig on Sunday (which coincides with my birthday woo!) so I’m trying to take a break for the weekend from work, before presenting my project on Tuesday. I was reflecting on how my project started and remembered where I got my “if you could see my voice, what would it look like?” tag line from. It still makes me smile. I hope the video of my...
