End of Phase "Make 1"
Tomorrow marks the end of the first of two ‘make’ phases of my project. I thought, before posting a video, I would sum up what’s been happening. I started out with a basic prototype in January, with word selection and some typographic effects in place. This has gradually matured since, through role playing and extreme experience prototyping (where there is perhaps more smoke and...

Testing... 1...2...3.
Between us we have worked out how to get the speech recognition working with Mum. By training individual words and skipping the whole training we gained a much greater accuracy rate (as in, once the small words were skipped, it was perfect!). This proves the potential of the project and shows that I am not plucking ideas out of THAT far in the future. The scrolling style of the current prototype...

SO. Nightmare.
First time round there wasn’t much stress getting Mum trained up on the dictation software, but this time all went to shit and we scraped through the training…. now it only gets %50 of the <big> words right… most words are small… and those are probably not the ones that we miss-hear anyway! NIGHTMARE but then my project was always admitting the software wasn’t...

Last night...
… I stayed up with Json, Ajax and jQuery. The least cool people on the planet (I’m a geek - we’re talking programming here.) Oh and Dave, friend who actually knows this stuff!! My original prototype worked <JUST> but was a bit buggy; and so the whole thing has now been reworked. Originally the speaky software updated the text box while ajax was making constant checks for...

How do I make typography hesitant?
I’m hopefully going to post a short animation later today demonstrating an answer. As I said before there’s been some doubt as to whether or not the wearer of the communication device would want / need to see the display (so for example, they can see when it makes a mistake) but I had always assumed that I would do a good enough job of ensuring the typography would look hesitant and...

1 step forward, 5 back.
Well I’ve fixed everything I had broken in terms of this web-app for the iphone, but I can’t seem to get any further forward with it. I want to have an app that gives me some control over the display there and then, for testing purposes as well as to gauge interest in the potential of changing the display by the user. HOWEVER to do so I need to merge my files (I currently have a site...

Preparing what I’ll be filming in a series of concept videos - user with dysarthric speech reading directly to camera - user then reading the same while wearing the device in a series of different configurations: with a fixed display, with a degrading display, with different typefaces, with an on/off button, with or without punctuation (which suggests tone, something I never...
