Human 2.0, blurring the boundaries between human and machine. Really interesting, wish I’d come across this when I was doing my dissertation! Essentially this demonstrates what is seemingly known to only a few - the ‘disabled’ person designing situations to enable participation in otherwise excluded activities. It’s exciting that we are bringing this ‘fringe’...

New Photos - ECA degreeshow 2010
Didn’t take too many photos (wasn’t sure if I should really be taking ANY) but enjoyed the ECA degree show all the same!! It did make me feel a little over practical - guess I really am not an artist, certainly the bulk of the work here went straight over my head!!

Been a while....
I’ve been having a break from real life, and went home home (parents home) for a few days. I also spent a couple of days in Edinburgh - forgot how nice it is. Dundee has a way of getting you down… but maybe that’s just because I associate it with the intense stress of getting a degree!! Being back in uni today, preparing for New Designers, was kind of… weird. I’ve...

Wish I’d seen this before. I’m in love with the cybraphon - affected by it’s online reviews ( and the emotions people express towards it through facebook, twitter etc ) the ‘band in a box’ plays music that reflects it’s current public status.

While I should be going over my presentation, I’m looking at cool things I’d like to buy. Probably useless things. But these are cool.

Exciting day
Been to the gym, the bank, and back to the bank, uni and I voted! Hoping to finally decide on a ‘new sound’ for the ipod application which is still making a breathing noise currently when you switch it on and off… I also need to try the postcard packaging out on the laser cutter - it’s going to look sweet! Pablo suggested engraving the text on the front / back, kind of like...

Gosh, a degree show is hard work.
Spent today fixing and finishing vinyl orders for everyones titles, names, hundred words, and the two BIG Interactive Media Design. Spent what felt like forever at a print place with my laptop and illustrator trying to get everything the same on a windows machine and it be big enough for print etc… sigh. Oh and then I did this:  Made an illustrator template for a postcard holder, going...

Subtle Subtitles : Project Review
Subtle Subtitles clarifies conversation with people with dysarthric speech by presenting subtitles in our peripheral vision in an intuitively crafted wearable. Those familiar with the impediment understand the slurred speech however, as with other variances in expression, strangers struggle to ‘tune in’ to the conversation. Current solutions for this communication difficulty use...

More exposure...
My blog post introducing Subtle Subtitles is now featured on http://www.fashioningtech.com/ ! (or for the exact post - click here) but if you click soon, you’ll see it on the front page!  Currently spending most of my time working on the degree show with postcard designs for the class: Need to get these printed soon, and work out a design for holding them, kind of like a book...

Weird, or not so weird, realisation.
I was looking out old pictures of the typeface I made for Subtle Subtitles, and realised that I should have decided on it far earlier than I did! In my initial pitch I used this image -   …And it took me months of research and user testing to come up with my handwritten, ‘chalk inspired’ font! I came to the chalk board metaphor as a way of communicating the written word but in...

Woo! Website
I have a project website and it’s nice. I spent today filming a ‘demo’ video, purely so that when I am not at the exhibit, there is a clear description and walk through of the process involved in using the scarf. I have omitted the ‘prototype’ parts for the sake of this demo, for example the fact that a computer microphone is being used as opposed to a microphone...

Subtle Subtitles Film
Interaction Design degree project: Documentary demonstrating context of a working prototype of an iphone app that subtitles people who are losing the ability to speak clearly. (In particular ‘ataxic dysphonia’). The iphone is held in an interchangeable scarf, and through a system of filtration that I have developed, and existing speech recognition technologies, only the vital words in a...

Endless talents...
SO I have spent the bulk of today mashing up a background track / music for my film, and I THINK I’m done. I am sick of the site of my piano / laptop / lots of cables / books but am impressed that I can “plug in” and record directly in computer land. Making it ‘happy’ was clearly a massive issue as well, it’s just not the most ‘joyous’ of films. But...

'On location': Day 1.
So that is me ‘half way’ through the shoot of the film. So far, so good. The deliverable is 1 minute, which I will do my best to stick to but some of the shots are too nice to ditch! At the moment, although I have a few hours of footage, the film stands at over a minute but that’s just with a quick rough cut and splice. Better to be in this position than struggling for...

New label, attached microphone.
Not so happy sewing, but as promised I have changed the label, it’s a little smaller and includes symbols for treatment of the ipod.
